NEWS  FROM OUR MEMBERS

***Do you have news you would like to share with other members - good news - a marriage, a grandchild, a trip, a job, recovery from illness - sad news - an illness, a death? Here is the place to do it. The news should be about your family, not anyone else's, unless they have specifically asked you to send it to the website. Email Erika Seigel at elsqx4@charter.net

***If you are aware of a special circumstance in which you feel the THC needs to acknowledge...a new baby , a sick member of the congregation, a happy occasion, a death in the family of a member...email Jody Kasten at ny2ncflame@hotmail.com

She will be happy to send a card from the THC and it is important that she is informed of these situations

The members of the Temple of the High Country are deeply saddened by the death of our wonderful friend and member Barry Pitt.  Barry was an integral part of our hopes and dreams of building our new spiritual home. He was a warm, loving and selfless man who we all looked forward to seeing on Friday nights. We will miss him.  We extend our thoughts and prayers to his beautiful wife Jane who has shared her voice with us during High Holiday services and who has also been a significant member of our congregation

We are excited to announce that Rabbi Aron Hier, from the Simon Wiesenthal Center,  will lead services on August 27, 2010 at 7:00 PM at St. Lukes Church behind Earthfare.  Please bring a friend.

The Temple of the High Country and the Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies will be hosting the annual Jewish Film Festival.  The festival will be held at the ASU Belk Library, Room 114 and is free to the public.  Please see the calendar of events for the information regarding each individual film.

We are approaching the Holiday Season and we are looking forward to services being led by our wonderful Torah Scholar, Peter Cohen. Please check the event calendar for the dates and times of services.  Please note that due to changes in schedule, there will be no "break the fast" this year.

Looking for a challah for Friday night........you can order one from Stickboy in Boone or Lowes foods in Banner Elk.  Just call the day before and they will make you one or two.  Stickboy has been wonderful to the Boone Jewish Community. They have even baked special round challahs for the holidays

Thank you to our Hillel Students who presented the Temple of the High Country with a check of $1,000 for our building fund.  This money was raised by the students through the organization of  a fundraiser ball.  We are so proud of "our kids" who have become an integral part of our congregation and have shown us their  deep commitment and love of Judaism..

Sisterhood is collecting recipes for a cookbook that will be produced.  If you have any recipes that you can share with us, please email to Erika Siegal at elsqx4@charter.net or Marilyn Ramo at daisyramo@aol.com.  This cookbook will be used as an on-going fundraiser for our temple general fund. Recipes do not have to be Jewish, however, should be appropriate for a Jewish cookbook.

Our Fair Ladies........  Our fundraising event was quite a success.  Bonnie and Jamie Schaefer were delighted as honorees and we raised approximately $47,000. Thank you to all of our members and friends who helped us before and during the event to help make it the success that it was.

There are still many naming opportunities left....please check our fundraising page and be part of the DREAM!

Please come to our congregational  meeting on Sunday September 12 at 10:00 AM at the Echota Clubhouse.  We will have elections for our board of trustees and we would like to share our updated plans regarding our new building.  We are hoping to break ground in the spring of 2011 and we are very excited about this news.  Please come to hear the details.

***Two of our young members are presently studying in Israel towards the goal of becoming a Rabbi.  It is amazing that in our little mountain community, we have created an atmosphere which has provided a strong base for learning and love of Judaism. We are very proud of you.....Marc Kasten and Shivonne Quintero.

***Marc Kasten is the son of Fred and Jody Kasten.  Fred and Jody are board members of the Temple of the High Country and Fred is a Past President.  Marc grew up as a member of the Boone Jewish Community and is presently in Israel  studying to be a Rabbi.  Our congregation has been very supportive of his goals and this is a letter which Marc has written to show his gratitude to us.

28 October 2009

Dear Chuck Lieberman and the Board of the Boone Jewish Community:

I continue to be blessed by the kind support that you have offered me.   Again, I feel that I need to explicitly state how appreciative I am of your generiousity.

As the autumn holidays have ended with Sukkot behind us, the weather here has changed dramatically into unpredictable days.  Just as our prayers have changed to include a line where we thank God for bringing rain, so too does the climate cycle in the Holy Land usher in just that kind of weather.  Since I am a fan of cooler weather, I am especially happy by the end of summer.

Four months have almost passed, and it is important that I relate to you the experiences that I have had.  First, you could not imagine the number of times that I have shared stories with my peers and teachers about a small community of Jews in the mountains of North Carolina.  It is amazing how such a tiny, but tight -knit group helped established my Jewish identity and pride, as well as giving me numerous opportunities to participate and learn.  Second, I have sent my parents a copy of information that you should feel free to publish on your website or in the printed newsletter.  In an effort to shorten the length of your meeting, I will not include my experiences inline.

Please know that I often think of the kindness and family that can only be offered by a small congregation like ours and I miss being a part of that.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me  (marckasten@gmail.com).

Thank you in advance for your consideration and your continued support.

Sincerely

Marc F Kasten
